ROCHESTER, NH-- January 23, 2003--Enterasys Networks, Inc. (NYSE: ETS), a leading broadline provider of enterprise networking solutions, today announced the results of a head-to-head benchmarking study comparing two Enterasys Security Routers (XSR) against similar offerings from Cisco Systems (Enterasys XSR-1850 vs. Cisco 2651XM and Enterasys XSR-1805 vs. Cisco 1751). The Tolly Group, one of the industry’s most respected testing organizations, performed the independent study, which concluded Enterasys received higher scores than Cisco in every area tested.
The products were evaluated in categories including routing, Access Control List (ACL) performance, Virtual Private Networking (VPN) performance and Quality of Service (QoS) performance. Specific results from the testing include:
- In VPN performance tests in a Fast Ethernet scenario, Enterasys XSR-1805 router delivered up to seven times the VPN throughput of a Cisco 2651XM router in the largest packet size test (1,420 bytes).
- The Enterasys XSR-1850 Security Router is three times faster in full-duplex routing than the Cisco 2651XM Modular Access Router for all but the smallest packet size.
- With QoS enabled, the Enterasys XSR-1805 delivered 100 percent wire-speed throughput at all packet sizes, while the Cisco 1751 only forwarded 40 percent of wire-speed throughput when handling 64-byte packets.
- The Enterasys XSR-1805 outperforms Cisco’s 1751 routers in 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps tests with zero-loss throughput when handling 64-byte packets.
- The Tolly Group testing shows that the performance of some Cisco branch routers may degrade significantly when services such as QoS and ACLs are activated, while the equivalent Enterasys routers deliver consistent high bandwidth and performance.
All testing took place in a LAN-to-LAN environment designed to stress each system’s processing power to the maximum allowable bandwidth. Complete details of the Tolly Group evaluation can be viewed by visiting www.enterasys.com/performance or www.tolly.com.
“Our rigorous testing environment has verified the performance and features of Enterasys’ Security Routers. Typically, we see vendors test performance with ancillary functions like ACL and QoS processing turned off, but Enterasys tested its routers with full-device functionality enabled, meaning users get a truer picture of overall device performance,” said Kevin Tolly, president of The Tolly Group.
